Cyclemotors were a popular means of cheap transport in the early 1950s, so it was only a matter of time before motorcycle manufacturer BSA, also one of the UK's biggest cycle makers, offered a suitable power unit. This took the form of the 'Winged Wheel', introduced in 1953. Powered by a 35cc two-stroke engine, the Winged Wheel fitted in place of a bicycle's normal rear wheel, driving.

Designed to replace the rear wheel of a normal bicycle, the unit embodies gear drive transmission through a three-plate clutch, a 9½in-diameter internal expanding brake and a heavy duty free-wheel of the locking roller type.
