In fact, this structure is the home of Schlumberger's Cambridge research centre, designed by Michael Hopkins and Partners and opened in 1985. It is a key work in Hopkins' career, and one of the best 1980s buildings in Cambridge. Schlumberger was founded in the 1920s. The firm is concerned with the technical and engineering aspects of oil-drilling.

The landmark Schlumberger Gould Research Centre in Cambridge by Hopkins Architects has been listed at Grade II* by heritage minister Tracey Crouch The 1985 building, which features a suspended glass-fibre fabric roof, was characteristic of the High-Tech architectural movement in Britain at the time - a style spearheaded by practice founders.
